About the book
The Art of Fashion sets down the method that Yas Gonzalez has practised at House of Yas since 2010: the way an idea is researched, drawn, built, fitted, staged and finally carried into the world under a designer's own name. Each chapter treats one territory of the craft with the rigour of a studio lesson and the candour of a designer who has made every one of these decisions herself.
The reader moves from the inner work of inspiration and the mood board, through colour, fabric and the passage from sketch to silhouette, into the fitting room and the working rhythm of a couture house. The final chapters turn outward, to the story a label tells, the theatre of the show, the responsibility of the designer as citizen, and the portfolio, the pitch, the press and the buyers who decide whether a vision reaches its public.
Inside the book
Every chapter unites a lecture with history, case studies and practical workshops, accompanied by Del Corazón notes: personal reflections written by Yas for the student who seeks instruction and accompaniment together.
Clothes speak before the wearer does. Silhouette, proportion, fabric and colour read as a grammar with its own rhythm, tone and emotional vocabulary.
The five wells from which a designer draws, and the discipline of gathering memory, place, art and heritage into research a collection can stand upon.
The mood board as manifesto: composed to carry an emotion to collaborators, clients and audiences alike.
How colour, hand and drape govern what a design can become, and how to read a textile before the first cut.
The passage from drawing to three-dimensional form: proportion, line and the decisions that give a silhouette its authority.
Fabric understood as an artistic medium, and the choices through which luxury and responsibility coexist.
The fitting as choreography, where construction meets the living body and a garment learns how to move.
The working rhythm of a Miami couture house, from the first brief to the finished piece, set down step by step.
How a coherent narrative turns a sequence of collections into a recognisable house with a voice of its own.
The runway as total theatre, and the casting, sound and staging that give a collection its first public life.
Designing for every body and every sensibility, including the sensory considerations that make clothing truly wearable.
The civic responsibilities of the designer toward community, culture and the next generation of makers.
Composing a portfolio that states, with precision, who you are as a designer and what only you can offer.
Presenting a vision to clients, partners and institutions with clarity, conviction and command of the room.
Building a public presence with intention, from editorial relationships to the discipline of being seen well.
The commercial architecture behind a label: agents, buyers and multichannel distribution.
